Pet Allergies -- Dr. Muller's Pet Tips

    Can animals have allergies?

Absolutely! Just as humans can become hypersensitive to various types of pollen, dust, hair, or food, animals can also have allergic reactions. Animals having allergic reactions will scratch excessively, often to a point that becomes unhealthy.

    Symptoms:

    • scratching, chewing on, licking, itching areas of skin
    • red bumps (actually a sign of infection)
    • sensitivity when petted in certain areas
    • inflammed areas of skin

What should I do if my pet has allergies?

Bring your pet to your veterinarian for analysis. Most allergies can be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs and/or antihistimines. In some cases dietary supplements may be necessary. In serious cases, the specific allergen causing trouble may need to be identified, and the pet may have to be removed from contact with the allergen.
