Feline Urological Syndrome (FUS)

    What is Feline Urological Syndrome?

Feline Urological Syndrome (FUS) is a common disorder in cats which prevents them from urinating properly. While the causes are not clearly known, the effects can be deadly:

Uremia -- a condition that occurs when the cat's kidneys are not properly removing waste from bodily fluids. The buildup of wastes in the bloodstream can become toxic and can cause death.
Urolithaisis -- a condition that occurs when crystallized minerals irritate and plug up the bladder and urethra. This can also cause a buildup of wastes and death.
Cystitis -- occurs when the bladder walls become irritated. This can cause blood and secretions to amass and inhibit proper urological function.
Bacterial Infections -- various types of bladder/urinary infections can result from FUS.

    Symptoms:

    • straining to urinate
    • urinating outside of litter box
    • urinating only small amounts or no urine at all
    • blood in urine

    What can be done?

In most cases, medication should be sufficient to ease FUS, but in extreme instances surgery may be necessary. If you notice FUS symptoms in your cat, contact your veterinarian to discuss treatment. As with most disorders, the earlier it is diagnosed and treated, the better the prognosis for the animal involved.

    How can I prevent FUS?

    • provide a healthy, balanced diet for your cat
    • make sure your cat always has plenty of fresh water to drink
    • make sure that your cat stays in good physical condition
